Logging
The following is a step-by-step guide to log video rushes using FORscene:
Open the logging Window:
- Firstly select the tape that you wish to log. Rushes can be identified by the 'R' in the top right corner of a files icon.
- Left click and drag this file into the play (Blue) window.
- On the blue timeline, left click on the button that says 'Timeline' until it says 'Logging'.
This will change the window to display the logging columns.
- The columns can be changed by right clicking on the top row where the column titles are. A tick list will appear of visible columns, select or deselect the columns you want visible by clicking when a column is highlighted green.
- To adjust the width of a column, click and drag horizontally on a divide in the top column.
- Left clicking on a column title will sort it (ascending) by the selected column, a second left click sorts it descending.
- Clicking on the 'Private' button adds an extra column where data can be entered that cannot be seen by any other users.
- The other feature in the logging section is to click on the 'Options' button and select the feature 'Blank lines for unlogged clips'.
This will add a blank line within the timecode for any video clips that have no logging data.
Start Logging:
- To start logging, click in the shot column so that the keyboard is focused
- Press insert to start playing the video clip
- Type your log then press return at the end of the shot, the inpoint will be marked when you start typing and the outpoint
will be marked when you press return. Each log is saved whenever you press return.
- Press insert at any point to stop the clip to catch up on typing.
- You can also mark in and out points by shuttling around the clip, or by typing in the timecode underneath the video.
- By pressing shift + return at the end of a log the inpoint will be marked at the same timecode as the previous shots outpoint.
- By pressing ctrl + return you will create a new line within the box that you are currently typing in. This works in
both active and saved entry.
Review your logs:
- You can edit a log by clicking on the text with the mouse cursor
- You can also jump to a timecode in the logging window by dragging it onto the video or by double-clicking on it.
Print log:
- Click on the print button on the log entries window title bar, this opens up a new window with the printable log in
- Then use the web brower's print option to print, depending on the set-up of your logging window, landscape orientation may be more appropriate.
Assemble edit from log:
- Drag the text of a log entry into the record window. This will add that clip to the timeline.
Searching within a log:
- Word/s within a log can be searched for by entering them into the search field at the top of the logging window. You can then scroll through the log to see where the word/s appears or by clicking on the 'Options' button you can
choose to hide unmatched lines when searching. The search is incremental so begins searching as soon as you
start typing.
Keysets:
- The keysets button can be used to set certain keys or letters/words to bring up an expansion if typed while logging. They are assigned by
left clicking on the keysets button and then inputting the key or word and its desired expansion.
- Keysets can be saved and then selected by
clicking on them in the drop down menu at the top of the keysets window.
Notes:
- You can shuttle aroud the video and set in and out points manually for a comment
- If you set an outpoint at the same timecode as your inpoint the default selection that applies for that comment
is the current clip (everything between timecode breaks).
- You can watch the video double size if you press the resize button on the top right of the play (Blue) video window
.
To bring the window back to normal size, click on the resize button.
- You can view log entries of a clip without opening the video itself. Right click on a file within its folder
and select 'Log Entries'. This will open up the log entries for that specific clip. To open the video after,
double click on a timecode in the log entry to open the video window.
- If you spell a word incorrectly your word will display a red line underneath. To use the spell checker, right click on the word and a selection of available options will be available.
