FORscene upgrade

FORscene's web upload feature is being used more and more: professionals use it for images and audio files; and User Generated Content originators use it for mobile phone video. With uploads of up to 512MB, the new progress bar helps users to plan their work.

Publishing

The State University of New York (SUNY) uses FORscene to teach students how to edit video. They are using FORscene to publish their series on the unique food of New York state.

FORscene is attracting considerable attention for supporting an entire Citizen Journalism workflow. 4rvf reports: "The news team ... filmed stories on their mobile phones, including on-location shooting in London during the event. The footage taken was uploaded over the air or via PC and Mac into FORscene for editing, and was then published to the web and as a podcast".

iPlayer protest

The controversial BBC iPlayer continues to attract criticism. The Free Software Foundation staged a demonstration outside the BBC yesterday. This video of the event was made using the latest Citizen Journalism tools, a Nokia N95 and FORscene.

FORscene upgrade

Videos edited in FORscene and Clesh and then published on the web now have a new feature: mousing over the video during playback shows a novel progress bar, which indicates not only position in the video, but also hints at the video and audio content throughout the video. The most recent videos published on the Clesh Showreel demonstrate this feature in action.

The official newspaper of IBC, theibcdaily, informs readers: "Among the offerings that add value to your IBC experience is the IBC Training Zone, a regular and very popular feature ... In the technical training theatre there is ... Forbidden Technologies". Forbidden's sessions are at 11.00 on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 September.

FORscene upgrade

FORscene handles many types of content such as video, audio and subtitles. Graphics can now uploaded through the web interface and directly incorporated into the video track. There are many examples to be found on the Clesh Showreel.

Recent press

The press continues to mention Forbidden in more general contexts. Broadcast has a two page article discussing the recent spate of mis-editing: "Stephen Streater, chief executive of web-editing technology company Forbidden Technologies, says: ‘An editor once showed me a clip of a soldier from the Bosnian war being filmed in an office some distance from the action. The soldier said: "It is very dangerous here," and the sound editor followed this with a mild explosion arguing that it added weight to the soldier's words. This struck me as an unacceptable distortion.’ This footage did not go to air".

Televisual features Tapeless methods of working: "Platform Post, which works on a wide range of broadcast projects, uses FORscene to enable clients to review work-in-progress from their laptop, moble phone or video iPod ... ‘FORscene allows producers to add frame accurate specific feedback whilst viewing the footage,’ explains Platform's joint md David Tasker, ‘enabling editors to see exactly what the client is after’".

FORscene upgrade

Frequent upgrades continue to refine and extend FORscene. The latest, requested by a North American customer, includes the ability to review and edit content at 150% of its original size, in addition to the 100% and 200% previously provided.

As FORscene is accessed over the web, it is ideally placed for exhibition offers. AV Interactive notes: "During Broadcast Live in June, Forbidden Technologies made trial accounts available to professionals interested in trying FORscene ... the take up exceeded that from a similar promotion at NAB earlier in the year".
