Internet advertising expands
The Guardian quotes a recent report: "The amount spent by advertisers on the web [in the UK] has grown by 19% year on year to £196.7m in 2002 ... Despite the increase, the internet still only takes 1.4% of the total amount spent on advertising every year". CyberAtlas notes that the Internet advertising market as a whole has had "the first consecutive quarterly increase since the second quarter of 2000". The FT highlighted a report showing online advertising was last year "the fastest growing advertising medium", outstripping cinema for the first time. Europemedia.net completes the picture with: "the bulk of online advertising is made up of banner ads".

The FT quotes recent research on television viewing: "the UK and Ireland form one group ... with very heavy TV viewing - an average of 198 minutes per day".

GPRS growth
"The data shows an encouraging increase in the number of GPRS users with 47% growth in Q4 2002", proclaims 3G, who also have a graph showing recent GPRS Subscriber Takeup.

User Interface considerations
Charles Arthur of the Independent has been trying out a 3G phone: "These phones have a depth of functionality that is overwhelming ... Using that sort of power effectively ... calls for not just world-class but solar-system-class, galaxy-class user interface design. Sadly, you don't get it".

Java update
Computer Weekly writes: "[Vodafone and Orange] have invested in a US software startup developing an operating system based on Java technology. Orange and Vodafone ... have invested $17.5m in SavaJe Technologies in a drive 'for open standards and greater choice', said Vodafone". News.com informs us Sun's executive vice president for software as saying "100 million phones have shipped with Java so far. Programmers inevitably will follow that popularity".

Yinka Adegoke continues: "[BT] Broadcast Services this week announced the third codec to form part of its offering, via a partnership with Forbidden Technologies".
