Nokia launches colour Java phones
Nokia launched a range of new phones at CeBIT, including the Nokia 3410, 6310i and 7210, all with Java. Business Wire writes that the Nokia 3410 "is the company's first mass-market product open for independent software developers to offer Java applications to consumers." Forbidden Technologies already has a Java implementation of its codec at various image sizes.

Research by Nielsen//NetRatings, presented by Michael Pastore in an article in CyberAtlas, shows that 498 million people worldwide now have Internet access at home.

The Evening Standard reports that the Independent Broadcasting Commission has granted BT a licence to provide television over traditional and broadband networks.

3G interoperability push
A group including Alcatel, LG Electronics, NEC, Philips, Qualcomm, Sagem, Samsung, Siemens and Mitsubishi/Trium has agreed to work together to ensure interoperability of their 3G radio interfaces. "We know interoperability between handsets and networks is a critical point on the path to commercial 3G services," said Erwan Menard, deputy marketing director for mobile networks at Alcatel, in an article in Electronics Weekly.

Norway leads the way in web content charging
A Norwegian alliance is reported in the FT to be about to launch a micropayment system to charge for web content.
